Deck Dimensions & Framing Spacing
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the standard joist spacing for a wood deck?
For standard pressure-treated wood decking (5/4"×6"), floor joists are spaced 16 inches on center (OC). For composite decking (Trex, TimberTech) or diagonal wood decking, joists must be spaced 12 inches on center to prevent board sagging.
How many deck screws do I need per square foot?
A rule of thumb is approximately 3.5 screws per square foot of deck surface. For a standard 12x16 foot deck (192 sq ft), you will need approximately 700 screws (two 5-lb boxes of 2-1/2" or 3" exterior deck screws).
Can I use 2x6 for deck joists?
According to the AWC DCA 6 prescriptive residential deck code, 2x6 joists can only span up to 9 feet (under standard 40 psf live load). For spans between 10 and 14 feet, 2x8 or 2x10 joists are required.
