How much extra tile should I buy for waste?
For a standard grid layout on square rooms, add 10% for cutting waste. For diagonal layouts, herringbone patterns, or rooms with lots of niches and angles, add 15% to 20% waste.
How many 12x12 tiles make 100 square feet?
A single 12"×12" tile covers exactly 1.0 square foot. For 100 square feet, you need 100 tiles plus 10% waste, meaning you should buy 110 tiles (or 11 boxes if packed 10 per box).
How many square feet does a 50-lb bag of thin-set mortar cover?
It depends on your trowel notch size. With a 1/4" V-notch (small mosaics) a 50-lb bag covers about 110 sq ft; a 1/4" square notch covers about 95 sq ft; a 3/8" square notch about 65 sq ft; and a 1/2" square notch (large-format tile) only about 40 to 50 sq ft.
